Dental Cleaning

Dental health is extremely important to us at Bryan Area Animal Hospital.  As in human medicine, preventative care is very important. Our doctors perform an oral exam with every physical exam in hopes to make our clients more aware of their pets overall dental health to prevent dental disease. Not only is dental disease painful, it is also harmful to the function of internal organs.

Our dental cleanings provide:

  • Evaluation of individual tooth health
  • Assessment of gum tissue
  • Removal of plaque and tartar
  • Polishing of each tooth (necessary when ultrasonic dental scaler is used)

Digital Dental Radiology

Another great tool we use here at Bryan Area Animal Hospital is Digital Dental Radiology (x-ray). Dental x-rays allow us to see what is going on inside the tooth and beneath gum tissue. This ability gives us the advantage of seeing a problem and removing it before it causes a problem for the neighboring teeth and surrounding gums. Our dental radiology unit is digital which allows us to quickly take detailed x-rays of the inner portion (pulp) and root of the tooth. The ability to visualize the tooth root allows us to see if there is any bone/attachment loss or even a tooth root abscess. A look inside the tooth at the pulp allows us to make sure that the tooth as a whole is healthy.

Both photos are dental x-rays from Artie, the 11 year old West Highland Terrier. Taking a look at the photo on the left, you can see that the tooth farthest to the right has not only some bone loss, but the tooth root is also being reabsorbed by the body. Taking a look at the photo on the right we notice that the tooth in the center has a black pocket around it, we call this attachment loss. Without x-rays we may not have known to remove these diseased  teeth. This would have caused problems with the neighboring teeth and surrounding gingiva (gums) causing Artie to be painful in his mouth and lose even more teeth in the future.
